New technologies teach us about their elders Richmond Writing

New technologies teach us about their elders Richmond Writing In the link above we see an image of an alphabet design by Godfrey Sykes. The depiction of workers crafting each letter carefully highlights the craftsmanship possible in font design as well as the constructed nature of these abstract symbols designed as tools to represent sounds and guide their articulation in speech. In their arbitrary Latinate shapes there is no other significance, a trait that limits what they can represent and express. Recent developments in digital technology remind us of this semantic limitation. One of the most recent evolutions of Web 2.o is the development of micro-blogging sites, the most well-known of which is Twitter, where users can send a regular stream of brief personal updates in text and other media. Unlike a  regular blog, micro-blogging messages, sometimes called tweets are often limited to 140 characters potentially posing a compositional challenge for more complex expressions. In a recent NPR story Twitter Seen As Tool For Social Change in China Li Zhuohuan, CEO of a Chinese micro-blogging company called Jawai, is counting on the Chinese enthusiasm for text-messaging to translate into a passion for micro-blogging.  Though the Latin alphabet is that subtle and ancient elder from which many technologies evolved, this collection of arbitrary symbols of articulation is limited in its potential meaning by the abstract nature of the marks, known as phonemes, symbols representing speech sound. Chinese characters for example are not abstract phonemes but logograms, visual representations of whole words, concrete objects or concepts. Because of this, Zhuohuan notes that posts to Jiwai are limited to 140 characters. But Li points out that 140 Chinese characters contain double or even triple the expressive power of the same thing in English.   We might regret micro-bloggings reminder of the semantic deficits of the Latin alphabet, but we can rejoice in the simple design and convenience of its twenty-six characters in gratitude that we dont have to navigate the thousands of characters used by the Chinese. And we thought the QWERTY keyboard was hard! hanzi the ideogram for Chinese character in traditional and simplified Chinese

Dynamic Characters and Survival in John Steinbecks The...

Dynamic Characters and Survival in John Steinbecks The Grapes of Wrath In the American epic novel, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, there are pivotal and dynamic changes that occur in the various significant characters of Jim Casy, Ma Joad, and Tom Joad. Steinbeck specifically uses these characters to show their common realizations about all of humanity, in order to demonstrate his underlying meaning about the importance of people coming together, helping each other out, and surviving. Ma Joad illustrates this idea clearly when she speaks to Tom mid-way through the novel: â€Å"Why, Tom, we’re the people that live. They ain’t gonna wipe us out. Why we’re the people--we go on.† (350) Early in the novel we are introduced to a†¦show more content†¦As the novel begins, Tom has a completely independent outlook on life; concerned only with returning home from prison to indulge his own comforts and wants. It is only later after he has endured the hardships of the journey, in Jim Casy’s death, and his own exile, that he has time to think and realizes that it is united we stand, and divided we fall. He thus sacrifices his personal concerns and safety and leaves the family to go out into the larger community and help his people. He will go out and work to complete what Jim Casy had started. Whereas Jim Casy was too much of an idealist, Tom will try and put his plan into action: â€Å"Wherever they’s a fight so hungry people can eat, I’ll be there. Wherever they’s a cop beatin’ up a guy, I’ll be there.† (537) And lastly, the change from a smaller concern for just the family to moving into a larger world-view and concern for all of humanity is illustrated in the character of Ma Joad. Ma comes to realize as she feels at first she is losing family members through the ordeals of the trip, that she is in fact gaining a much wider community of people. She states this at the end of the novel quite clearly when she says: â€Å"Use’ ta be the fambly was fust. It ain’t so now. It’s anybody. Worse off we get, the more we got to do.† (569) Ma Joad’s selfless actions throughout the novel are the direct portrayal of Jim Casy’s ideals. You can say that its human nature to not take people advice so easily, rather is the truth being told to you, or a lie you’re still not going to take it lying down. We like to argue the facts, or stick to our lie. A great example of Symbolic Interactionism is when you’re trying to buy a car and trying to negotiate the price, trying to convince the seller to give you a lower price for the car. This is where you can claim that the price for the car is too high for the year or the model. It’s where you don’t take the first thing that is said to you. In addition too, Symbolic Interactionism perspectives, there is Functionalism Perspective. The idea of the Functionalist perspective leads back to Emile Durkheim, a Frenc h sociologist whose writings form the core of the functionalist theory (McClelland, 2000). Functionalism is what happens when social structures have positive effects on the constancy of society. It is the frame work for building theory that sees society as a complex system whose parts work together to promote harmony and stability. Academic Writing *Tragic Hero Victor Frankenstein, from the novel Frankenstein, meets the criteria to be considered the tragic hero. Victor Frankenstein meets these guide lines and fits them perfectly. Using those three categories one could conclude that he is the tragic hero. The first reason that Victor Frankenstein is the tragic hero is because he caused his own downfall. He created the creature that would potentially take over his life and control him in every way. If Victor had never created the creature in the first place then none of his hardships would have ever happened. Yet he did create the creature. His mind was so interested in science and he was so devoted and determined, that he created this creature without thinking about the effects, or what this creature would do once he came alive.
